Eat at Klassz

Eat at Klassz

It takes a lot for us to recommend a restaurant on Unventional, but Klassz is something special.  It has a great location (near the opera house), fantastic gourmet cuisine and many entrees under 15 USD.  After seeing the low prices, we were a bit suspicious, but each meal was superb.  Special mention goes to the duck with citrus, which was enough to make us return the next day.  Tie in the fact that the restaurant has connections with a large regional winemaker and you're going to get a great meal with great wine and a borderline unfathomable price.
Walk along the Danube

Walk along the Danube

Buda and Pest are two distinct entities lying along the Danube.  Walking along the river allows you to take in the two different landscapes, the famous Parliament building (pictured at top), several beautiful bridges and the most striking Holocaust-related work of art in Eastern Europe.  During WWII, the fascist militia rounded up Jews and led them to the banks of the river .  They were ordered to remove their shoes and then were shot, with their bodies falling into the river.  The 60 pairs of shoes here serve as a memorial to them.  It's a moving tribute and one of the several memorable sights as you make this walk.
Spend an afternoon at the Szechenyi Baths

Spend an afternoon at the Szechenyi Baths

The Hungarians are famous for their thermal baths and there are a number of places that can meet your needs.  Szechenyi offers the best combination of authentic experience and grandiose surroundings while still being fairly comfortable for a tourist.  Unlike some of the baths, everyone here will be wearing a bathing suit and there are plenty of indoor and outdoor co-ed options, which is handy if you're traveling as a family or with a significant other.  Spending a couple hours here in the morning followed by a late lunch at a nearby restaurant is a great way relax before a busier afternoon of sightseeing.

Don’t bother trying to ride the metro or trams for free. You WILL run into a ticket checker and have to pay the fine. Tickets are relatively cheap so just make sure that you always have a current one.2-tram.JPG
